When you come to Boys State, expect an intense, action packed experience unlike anything you have participated in before. When you arrive, you will be assigned to both a city and a political party. Your city is a group of forty delegates who live together in for the course of the week. Your city will compete against others in politics, athletics, and other competitions in an attempt win the award of “Best City” at the end of the week. Your political party (either Nationalist, Independent, or Federalist) will develop a platform, hold primaries, and ultimately try and win the general election.
Boys State offers numerous opportunities for participation. A delegate can run for and participate in political office, compete at athletic or academic competitions, take part in legal simulations, and work in broadcast and print journalism. Delegates are advised throughout the week by staffers who are all graduates of the Boys State. The goal of the program is to learn by doing, and over the course of the week delegates will learn more than any year in a civics course.
Throughout the week, delegates will have the privilege of hearing from elected officials from across the state of Mississippi, as well as to compete for scholarships.
